Since I’ve previously reviewed sexy costumes before, it made sense to me that SexyCostumes.com contacted me to see if I was interested in reviewing a Halloween costume. It took me more than a day to pick out a costume from their site.

Part of the problem was my own indecisiveness. The other part was a problem I have with women’s Halloween costumes in general: I don’t believe that a costume’s skirt has to end halfway up my thigh in order to be sexy. It doesn’t matter what store or site you shop at – most women’s costumes are cut far too short. Another issue I was having was with sizing – costume manufacturers do not use standard sizes, so you have to look at the actual measurements in inches to determine what will fit you. My contact with the company was very helpful when explaining how to choose the right size, so it came down to finding a costume I liked that was also available in my size.

I picked the Gothic Vampira costume. I didn’t actually choose it in order to be a vampire, but I though it would make a suitable Bellatrix Lestrange costume to complement TJ’s Harry Potter costume this year. However, I figured I’d vamp it up for this review, since they were nice enough to toss in a pair of movie quality vampire teeth for me.

It turns out that I overcorrected when choosing the size of the costume. I asked for the extra large to fit my chest. The size chart said 37″, and I’m a 36″ – but the package said that the correct chest measurement was 40″. Because it was a little too large in the chest, the top hem folded over a little to show the lining.

Overall, I was happy with the look of the costume, even though I don’t have the same slim lines as the model on the website. (The corset piece on a $30 costume isn’t going to achieve miracle results like a corset with boning in it.) The silly photo above shows you what it looks like on my size 8/10 body instead of the stick thin chick on the site, too. 🙂

The feel of the costume was something different. The lace halter was scratchy and kind of freaked me out when I thought I ripped it by adjusting the dress… It’s attached with Velcro though, so it didn’t tear. THE BAT WINGS. I would not wear them for longer than the 10 minutes it took to do our little photo shoot. The plastic bands were too tight on my arms, and I actually broke one of them when sliding it up toward my shoulder. Tom tied it on for me so we could take pictures. I think a black cape or cloak would be a better accessory than the bat wings.

You’ll notice that I am not sporting vampire fangs in the picture, even though I mentioned they had been included in my package. The instructions looked simple enough, but even with my dutiful husband’s assistance, we could not get the denture compound to properly set and conform to my teeth. I really tried, but one of the fangs fell off before we could even snap the first picture. The package said I’d be able to eat and drink normally, but I couldn’t even talk properly anyways. They would never have worked as part of a legitimate costume.

I do like the dress, though I may invest in a flesh-toned bodysuit to go underneath (deal with the scratchy lace while keeping me warm) and a black cape.
