I love Halloween candy as much as the next person, but I’m pretty vigilant about the amount of sweets I allow TJ to eat. I’m not going to forbid him from eating candy, but we have a one-piece-per-day rule after Halloween. So I like it when people offer non-candy treats for the little trick-or-treaters at the door. No one wants to be the House That Gives Out Raisins, though, so here are five healthier Halloween treats that don’t suck:

  1. Dark chocolate. Yes, it’s still candy, but having an ounce of dark chocolate per day is actually good for your health! Look for Hershey Special Dark miniatures or other dark chocolate minis.
  2. Popcorn. Popcorn is a whole grain, and kids need to eat whole grains every day! Look for fun size bags of popcorn in the Halloween aisle.
  3. Funky Monkey Snacks. Funky Monkey makes dried fruit with a better texture than you’ll find in other dried fruits, and 3 servings of fruit per ounce! TJ liked the sample we received of the Applemon (apple cinnamon) flavor, and he picked out the pieces of apple and banana from the Carnaval Mix because he didn’t care for the pineapple and papaya. The apple was also my favorite, but my husband liked the whole Carnaval Mix. Might work well in his next homemade trail mix!
  4. Pretzels. My son loves pretzels, so he would think this is cool. Other kids may not, but pretzels are most often fat-free snacks, and I’ve seen them in fun size packages alongside the Halloween candy.
  5. Cereal bars or granola bars. Look for bars without a lot of sugar in them, particularly those made with real fruit or nuts. (Try to have non-nut options for those with allergies.)

  1. Ooh, I love freeze-dried fruit, and these combinations sound really yummy. I’d like to try Pink Pineapple the most, though, because the intensified flavor of freeze dried guava sounds really amazing!

We’re giving out fruit snacks from Target this year- not quite raisins, but I’m not expecting kids to dance away from my doorstep in glee. (That is, unless they’re my kids… they think that fruit snacks are pretty much the best thing ever.)
