For the first time in over 140 years, Sweethearts released a new line that moved from Valentine’s Day Conversation Hearts to patriotic messages on their new Red, White, & You Sweethearts. I was lucky enough to be sent some samples of the new Sweethearts to test out with a patriotic project for the 4th of July.

American Flag Cake with Sweethearts

Look what we made:

One of our friends even TwitPic-ed it before we cut the cake at our little Fourth of July party.

I’ll admit that I’m not the greatest cake decorator in the world, but I think it turned out pretty well – especially considering that TJ helped me with the candy heart placement! The cake idea was part of the kit sent to me with the samples of Sweethearts. So clever! My only complaint was that my samples didn’t contain enugh of the pink Sweethearts to complete the stripes. I needed to have 100 pink hearts to make continuous stripes, but I only had about 50 of them, so I had to make do with the shortage. It would’ve looked totally better with more Sweethearts!

Despite the fact that I didn’t have perfect stripes like the one in the recipe they sent me, the cake was enjoyed by all! The Sweethearts added a hint of strawberry  flavor to our tasty devil’s food cake with white and blue frosting. TJ was sampling the leftover Sweetheart candies while the cake was baking, too.

Red, White & You Sweethearts and the USO

These new Sweethearts help support Operation USO Care Package, which has distributed more than 1.5 million care packages to U.S. service members – at a rate of 25,000 care packages a month to our troops around the world! Sweethearts is making a minimum donation of $75,000 to the USO, and you can help by making a donation to the USO yourself!
