I got a chance to do a tasty review of gourmet nuts from Oh! Nuts. Thanks for listing the review opportunity, Viral Conversations! I got to select three different bulk items to receive a free pound of each for review. Awesome! I chose Roasted Unsalted Cashews, Sugar-Free Chocolate Almonds, and Peanut Clusters. Sadly, the Peanut Clusters were out of stock, and they sent me Almond Brittle instead. (Had I paid for the items instead of getting them for free to review, I’m sure I would have been consulted before substitution was made.)

Sugar-free or not, the chocolate covered almonds were, by far, my favorite of the bunch.  I’ve been a long time fan of chocolate covered almonds. When I was pregnant for TJ, I bought myself a bag of chocolate covered almonds every week. Never got tired of them. Why did I request the sugar-free variety? Because I wanted to feel a little less guilty about eating chocolate covered  almonds. There was no way to tell that these babies were sugar-free. The taste and texture of the chocolate was everything I could have hoped for! (And I’m big on texture as well as taste.) I finished these babies in four sittings. I actually made myself nauseous when I finished off the bag, because I’m fairly certain there was more than a quarter of a pound left at the time. It didn’t detract from my enjoyment, though. I’d definitely order these chocolate covered almonds again. Maybe Tom will get more than two of them next time!

cashewsRoasted Unsalted Cashews

The cashew is my whole family’s favorite nut. I inherited my love for cashews from my parents. Tom also loves cashews. And we passed it on to TJ, as well. I loved the cashews when I first tried them. I wasn’t so sure about Tom, because his grunt was fairly non-commital. But after his second bite, he said, “These cashews are full of pure cashew flavor.” He’s such a dork. But he was right. Store-bought cashews don’t have the same punch. These cashews didn’t need salt for flavor. They were awesome just as they were. Kitty (my mother-in-law) tried them and liked them. TJ was unhappy when I wouldn’t let him just sit there and eat them non-stop. (Save some for Mommy, buddy!) The cashews were a big hit.

I feel bad about the almond brittle. You see, I’m not a big brittle fan, and Tom’s not a big almond fan. It was a substitution for what we really wanted, and while it was reasonable to assume we’d accept another sweet item, it just didn’t work out. We’re too picky. Tom was willing to say that the almond brittle “wasn’t bad,” and he finished the piece he’d taken. I took one small bite and didn’t want another. So I brought it down to my parents’ house, since my brother Joe and his family were up visiting for the weekend, and there were loads of people around to eat it. My brother Josh seemed to like it, and I think my grandma did, too. But there’s still at least half a pound left, so it’s just not as awesome as the chocolate covered almonds and the cashews. I guess there was bound to be a winner and a loser in this one.

Wrapping It Up with a Trail Mix Recipe

I have to be honest. I’d told Oh! Nuts that I wanted to use our sample nuts for my husband to make his custom homemade trail mix, but that didn’t work out. I finished the chocolate covered almonds before he had a chance, and we decided to keep the cashews pure and unadulterated. But so that I don’t completely disappoint, here are the ingredients that Tom uses in his homemade trail mix:

  • Salted peanuts
  • Unsalted cashews
  • Raisins
  • Craisins
  • Dried pineapple
  • Banana Chips
  • Semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • White chocolate chips

If I ate trail mix, I’d replace the white chocolate chips with chocolate covered almonds, but maybe that’s just me!
