Dear TJ,

You’ve had a sibling-like relationship with your friend Abby for a long time. You can’t wait to see each other, but when you get together, you fight like cats and dogs. Abby is almost 5, and she gets mad when you don’t understand things the way she does. She often is the instigator when there’s trouble, but I witnessed you starting trouble firsthand yesterday at lunchtime. We were at Grandma Debbie’s house, and you were playing with a noisy toy over and over again, knowing that Abby had asked you to be quiet because she was watching Miss Spider. What a stinker! You’re both jealous of the adult attention you think the other one is getting, which can be really quite maddening.

Uncle Joe, Aunt Meghan, and your cousin Avery are up to visit. They’re staying at Grandma Debbie’s house. When you first saw them Thursday night, you had the same kind of excited fascination for Avery as you had for their dog Ruby. By Friday, you were perfectly content to ignore her existence. You like the idea of baby Avery – in theory – but having yet another little person to contend with for everyone’s attention is not your idea of a good thing. I’m trying to make sure I pay attention just to you sometimes when we’re visiting with everyone, but you don’t like it when I hold Avery or smile at her at all.

Jealousy is a tough emotion. It’s hard to have to share the people you love, buddy, but you’re always number one to me. You’ll always be my baby. And my big boy. You’re my son, and I love you.

Love,
Mommy

  1. man…. if you find a solution to this – let me know…. Lilly has a friend Dylan – who is 7 months older than she – and they really love each other – but boy howdy sometimes when they get together – they fight like no-ones business.. and if she dares to go to his Mummy – whom she adores, he gets really stroppy and starts to hit out…and she can be a bit of a bossy miss too…. so I know its not one sided….it really saddens me…
