Rayman Origins for Nintendo 3DS is the first of several UbiSoft games we were able to review this holiday season. Since this and the other games will be making its way to TJ as Christmas presents, my husband Tom had to sneak them to work to try them out when he was on break for our little test drive. (I got a bit of an extension on the deadline because of this.) Tom is a seasoned gamer, having played countless games since the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) came out when we were kids. I asked him to test out these UbiSoft games both for himself and for their appropriateness as gifts for TJ, who is 7 years old. Here’s what he had to say:
First off, the game looks and sounds good. It’s a cross-platform game, so the 3D is purely cosmetic, reserved for some special effects and foreground/background depth. It’s colorful without being eye-wrenching. It controls well, once you get used to it, which only really took me one level. It seems like a solid platformer with plenty of room to explore from what I’ve seen so far. It may be a little difficult for TJ at this point; however, he has played Super Mario Bros. It seems like it’s about a half-step up from that in difficulty, things that your character can do, and the amount of discoverable items.
Seeing how the game is recommended for ages 10 and up, it’s understandable that TJ may have a little difficulty when trying to play Rayman Origins. But he takes to video games like a fish takes to water, so I don’t foresee major difficulties!
Thanks to UbiSoft and Clever Girls Collective for including me on the UbiChamps team!
