The fear of loud noises is common among toddlers. TJ is my little example. He hates the sound of the standing fan that my husband and I have in our bedroom. He has always been afraid of the vacuum cleaner being turned on. (Although he likes to play with it when it’s not plugged in.) He freezes whenever he hears a siren. And he recently decided that he’s afraid of the chime on my grandmother’s grandfather clock.
This morning, he and I slept in until 9:00, which was a pleasant surprise. But he woke up screaming.
When I got into his room, he stopped screaming and told me what was wrong.
“Mommy, scared of the sound! Scared of sound!”
It’s a wonder it took him as long as it did to wake up from the sound of the lawnmowers outside. I guess Thursday is mowing day this year in our development. (The Home Owners Association hired a different company this year.)
I explained to TJ that the sound was just the noise of the lawnmower cutting the grass outside.
He blinked at me and said, “Mommy, go downstairs and watch lawnmower. Please?”
I got him out of his crib, and he went right down the stairs to stand on the couch and look out the window to watch the lawnmowers.
Every once in a while, he still said to me, “Mommy, scared of the sound of the lawnmowers.” As he was watching them out the window. Silly boy!
