Last year, my mom kicked her Thanksgiving hostess habit. She didn’t have much choice: with my dad starting chemotherapy following his cancer diagnosis, she couldn’t have 20+ people (and their germs) in her house.

My dad, as a Life Member of the Vischer Ferry Volunteer Fire Department, was able to secure the use of the hall in the firehouse for Thanksgiving dinner. About 25 members of the clan we call family piled into the hall. I single-handedly mashed 15 pounds of potatoes. My brothers made a turducken.

My dad said grace and made everyone cry. And NO ONE got into any arguments – before, during, or after dinner. WOW! Even the kids got along well, watching a movie while the adults cleaned up.

We all had such a blessed time last year, we’re reprising it next week! I love this new tradition.

  1. 15 pounds of mashed potatoes? Wow, that was some work you’ve done. On the other hand, I hope you can get to have more of those great moments with your family.
