TJ’s generally very excited when Grandma Kitty comes to pick him up in the morning when Tom and I go to work.

Lately, he’s started running to the door as Tom gets ready to leave. “Daddy, I forgot something!”

Since it’s now a habit, Tom feigns ignorance. “What did you forget, buddy?”

“A kiss!”

And he runs over and gives him a big hug and a big kiss at the door. It’s sweet. It’s adorable.

But it was different this morning. I was still upstairs getting TJ dressed this morning when Tom was leaving for work. When Tom closed the door and said goodbye, TJ heard and burst into tears.

“I forgot something, Daddy! I forgot something!”

I ran down the stairs at a speed that wasn’t entirely safe. I opened the door and ran out, barefoot in the cold, and caught Tom as he was backing out of his parking space and about to pull out of the parking lot. He stopped his car, and I said, “TJ forgot something!”

TJ was coming down the stairs very slowly and deliberately, crying loud enough to for Tom to hear him as he got out of his car to come back inside. They met each other at the door, and TJ said it again, still crying. “I forgot something Daddy. A kiss.”

He gave him a kiss, and Tom went back to his car and drove away.

Meanwhile, inside the house, TJ started crying again. “Come baaack, Daddyyyyy! I forgot something! I forgot something!”

I had to comfort my little Pooks, who wanted to give his Daddy another goodbye kiss.
