Dear TJ,
I talked to my therapist about the talk we had on Saturday. I told him about how I told you that you hurt my feelings. He told me something I didn’t want to hear, but it makes a lot of sense.
It’s not your job to worry about my feelings.
Your job right now is to establish your individuality. If pushing me away makes it easier for you to be apart from me when I go to work, I have to let you do it. And I can’t make you feel bad or guilty about it.
So I’m going to suck it up when you tell me that you don’t want to play with me, or that you want to ride in Grandma’s van instead of my car. I can cry later on Daddy’s shoulder. But I’m not going to make you worry about me. You don’t need the incredible sense of guilt inside you that I have.
It’s going to be hard, and I may not be able to do it all the time, but I’ll try my best for you.
