I just got this message in my email:

Today at the high school during dismissal, transportation personnel noticed that a young man, not a Shen student, had two hunting rifles on a gun rack in his car. The district’s security called the Saratoga County Sheriff and NYS Police. Although the police determined that the young man was in legal possession of the guns and the appropriate gun locks were engaged, the possession on school grounds was violation of state laws. The young man was on campus to pick up his girlfriend. There was never an intent to harm students or school personnel.

The district encourages student and staff,  “If they see something, say something,” and to report any and all incidents that are suspicious. We commend the efforts of the staff members for their vigilance in following the district’s safety protocols.

So scary to know that there were guns on campus, but so grateful that things were handled the way they were, and that the kid didn’t intend to do anyone harm. I’m also very glad that TJ goes to an off-campus elementary school, so he was nowhere near the situation. It probably would’ve been pretty scary for the younger kids to see all of the cops at the high school.

I just don’t understand how the kid thought it would be okay to arrive on school grounds with hunting rifles. Even if he didn’t intend to use them there, wouldn’t all of the media surrounding school shootings suggest it would be a bad idea? Plus, if he left his car unattended for any length of time, someone else with deadly intentions might have tried to seize the opportunity to steal the weapons and go on a rampage. *shudder*

But it was a non-incident, and I am very glad that our school district will not be on the national news.

  1. It probably wasn’t an “Eh, it’s no biggie,” thought process. It was more likely a non-thought process, as in I doubt it crossed his mind.
Sounds like it was handled without undue drama, though.
