The Monster at the End of This Book
The Monster at the End of This Book was one of my childhood favorites. Click on the pic to buy it from Amazon!

If your preschooler is anything like my son, he or she can’t wait to read! TJ has loved books ever since he was a baby. We read to him before he could even roll over in his crib. He graduated from preschool last year, and he’s in kindergarten now, but he’s already reading so many things – books with actual paragraphs!

It’s easy to inspire a love of reading in your child. Preschoolers love to learn, and reading is the next big adventure. They all want to be able to read so they can be Big Kids. They get frustrated when we spell things so they don’t know what we’re saying, so they’re motivated to learn how to spell so they aren’t kept in the dark.

Make sure to set aside time each day to read with your child, even if it’s just for 10 minutes before bedtime. Reading time in our house is right after bath time right before bed. It doesn’t have to be Dr. Seuss or a Little Golden Book, but I’m sure other parents like me have a special place in their hearts for those books they read as children. TJ has a different “favorite book” every week.

You don’t have to buy hundreds of different books to satisfy your little bookworms, either. Your local library has shelves and shelves of books to choose from. Make a habit of taking your child to the library each week, maybe selecting a different book for each night at bedtime. Their imaginations are the limit!

Just reading to your kids will help them pick up the skills they need to learn to read for themselves. Do you remember your favorite books from childhood?
