Dear TJ,

It’s been a while since I wrote one of these, and you’re growing up so fast. You’re so tall that you don’t fit in shopping carts anymore, which presents a challenge for Saturdays when we go grocery shopping at Price Chopper.

TJ and his little shopping cartThe really cool thing is that Price Chopper recently got some little kid-sized shopping carts that have flags that say Customer in Training on them. You absolutely love pushing one of these arounds, because you feel like such a big shot.

I was nervous about you pushing your own cart at first, afraid you might run into people or otherwise get in the way. But you’re a pretty good listener, and you’ve only run into the backs of my feet twice. (Thankfully, I was wearing boots, which cushioned the blow.) You like to put the foods you like into your cart, which can include surprising things like carrots, raisins, and smoked pork chops.

The really great thing about you havng the little shopping cart? Other customers who smile at you. Oh sure, there are some grumpy people who see you as only another obstacle to get around. But you’re pretty good about staying right behind me so we aren’t blocking the aisle – unlike some bigger kids whose parents let them take up the whole aisle for minutes at a time.

People have started to compliment me – and you – for your excellent behavior. They chuckle about how well you’re coming alogn as a “customer in training,” and then they let me know how well behaved you are. How good you’re doing. How nice it is to see such a well-mannered child. Some of the compliments have come from store employees who see us each week, but others are from complete strangers who just happen to be walking by us as we shop.

So thank you, buddy, for being such a big boy. It makes me proud of you and proud of myself for raising such a wonderful kid!

Love,
Mommy

  1. Wow, I can imagine that being the cutest thing ever having him put his own things into his own shopping cart. Too bad there’s no Price Chopper around NYC.
