Dear TJ,

At school this week, you’ve been practicing songs and other things for your preschool graduation, which takes place next Friday. Grandma Kitty told me that Ms. Maryellen wanted to talk to her about this after school Wednesday.

You cried when you were supposed to be singing. You love preschool so much that you don’t want it to end. I love that you love learning, but I’m so sorry that I didn’t realize how big this was for you. Ms. Maryellen said that, if you’re having a hard time during the graduation ceremony next week, that we shouldn’t force you to stay and take part in it. Your last day of school is actually the following week, so if you need to leave because you’re too upset, you’ll get another chance to say goodbye to all of your friends.

But I talked to you that evening, once I found out what had happened. I didn’t realize we hadn’t told you that you’ll be attending summer classes at school, just like summer camp. And Ms. Maryellen is still teaching the class. When I talked to you about everything, you told me how much you’re going to miss Ms. Maryellen, so you won’t have to miss her quite yet!

You seemed to feel a little better about the whole thing once you’d heard the plan to go to school over the summer. Not all of your friends will be doing the same thing, but at least you’ll have your same teacher.

You’re such a sensitive, emotional boy. I am, too. Change is a difficult thing for all of us, but you seem to feel it more keenly than the rest of us. I hope that summer school will help make the transition to kindergarten much easier, since you won’t have to go for weeks without school.

Love,

Mommy

  1. Oh, bless his sweet heart! That’s wonderful (and sort of heartbreaking) that he loves school so much that he’s sad to see it end. I hope graduation is fun for him now that he knows he is going to school this summer.
