Does anyone else have to take blocks away from their kids because they can’t handle when their creations fall down?

TJ loves to build really tall towers with his Duplo blocks, even taller than himself. But they are very unstable, single columns of square blocks. No matter how much we try to encourage him to build more solid structures, he has a fascination with height. And he tries to carry his creations across the room to show them off. Inevitably, they come apart when he moves them.

And temper tantrums ensue.

“Gotta build! Gotta build!” he screams. He jumps up and down with his face turning red, and tears in his eyes.

We try to calm him down, reassuring him that he can put the tower back together, that he’s a good builder. “Back together!” But sometimes, even as he tries to rebuild, he can’t get over the tantrum.

After a few prompts to calm down and stop screaming, the blocks get put away and moved into the other room. He screams in protest for a little while, but then he gets distracted and moves on to something else.

An hour later, or a day later, he asks for the blocks back. And we try again.
