He’s been hinting at it for a while – TJ has been wanting to come with any family member who needs to use the bathroom. Whether it’s Mommy, Daddy, Grandma, Grandpa, or even Uncle Josh – we can all predict the inevitable “Come with me!” from the little guy if he head toward the bathroom.

He is very interested in the toilet. He likes to climb up and sit on it (with the seat cover down) and flush it. His interest in his own potty chair waxes and wanes. At first, he wanted to sit on it just so he could be naked. Now, he’ll ask to sit on it, but he doesn’t want to sit down for longer than a few seconds. I think he’s nervous about actually peeing in it, because he’ll ask for his diaper again, and he’s usually wet within a few minutes.

Last week, he became interested with underwear. Many mornings, he’s with me when I get dressed, and I always tell him what I’m doing. He decided to focus on changin’ da un-da-we-ah. One day, he asked for his diaper changes by asking me to change his un-da-we-ah. I mentioned this to my mom, and she told me to run with it while he’s interested. So I did.

We went to Target that afternoon, and we picked up some training pants. I didn’t know that such a thing existed; I thought there were diapers, Pull-Ups, and big boy underwear. The concept of underwear with extra padding in the crotch was new to me. It was more than $6 for a three-pack, and the choices were limited to pink or blue, but it was a purchase we felt we needed to make.

He tried his new underwear on that evening. He thought it was pretty cool for a few minutes. He patted them with both hands, and he pulled them down so he could sit on the potty chair for a minute. But after that, he took them off and asked for his diaper.

That’s okay.

We can go slowly, at whatever pace TJ is comfortable with. I don’t want to push this on him, but I don’t want to hold him back if he wants to do it, either. If he asks to wear his underwear, I’ll let him when his underwear – unless we’re going to leave the house. If he wants to sit on his potty chair, I’ll let him sit on his potty chair.

We’ll see how it goes.
