How to Use Polyvore

I’ve admired Emily Vanek‘s Polyvore boards from afar, but I’m a total Polyvore amateur. I don’t think my phone pic captured her true style today, but she did point out that she matches the carpet.

How to Use Polyvore (for Fun, Traffic and Profit)

What is Polyvore

  • Social network
  • Bookmarking site
  • Fashion, beauty, home decor
  • Can be used for a variety of other things:
    • Storyboard
    • Vision board
    • Online pin board
  • Like Pinterest, but with more manipulation of ideas
  • It’s like dressing up Barbie dolls for adults

Why Use It and How It Can Boost Pinterest Traffic as Well

“Do you want inspiration or do you want actual Amazon Prime 2-Day Shipping Outfits?” This is how Emily puts sets together. People love Polyvore on Pinterest.

What Types of Products/Images Make for a Good Board

Try not to use images of people wearing the outfits you put together. The models are much skinnier than your target audience.

How to Create a Board

You can get a Polyvore bookmarklet that will allow you to add images to your board from the retailers’ websites. You can do this to show people the actual outfits you wore on a certain occasion.

  • Think of a theme
  • Browse, add, and arrange
  • Don’t show outfits in real proportions, because you won’t be able to see accessories
  • Make things big; if people have to squint, they’ll just move on.
  • Use white space
  • Use text, embellishments, and backgrounds sparingly

Sharing Your Board

The images you add to Polyvore are public, so don’t go clipping freaky things you don’t want anyone else to see.

Once you publish a set, Polyvore gives you the option to embed it on your blog or share it on a variety of social media sites. If you embed it on your blog, you’re driving the traffic to your site, not to Polyvore. Also, you can use the opportunity to swap out their affiliate links for yours. (*cough* The Amazon links below are mine.)

We did a hands-on activity where we made Polyvore sets during the session. Here’s mine:

True Blue and Comfy Cute

Gaining Followers

You want to have a lot of set views and a lot of likes. Enter Polyvore’s contests and group contests. This will give you the exposure you want.

Transferring Followers to Traffic

Share your Polyvore sets on Pinterest via your blog, where you’ve embedded the sets. Disney sets can be especially popular for driving traffic, or whatever your particular fandom happens to be.
