Meg Crofton, President of Walt Disney World Resort is on stage now with some fun facts: 62,000 cast members here today. More than 300,000 pounds of laundry. Largest single site purveyor of wine  in the world. You could dine three times a day every day from now until August without dining in the same place twice. They prepare 9,000 pounds of food for their more than 1,500 animals each day. Disney buses travel more than 20 million miles per year.

WDW’s success is not really the business of guest entertainment, but that of making family memories. The theme for Disney Parks this year is “Let the memories begin.” We’re getting a reminder to take time to enjoy the parks with our family. We’re all being given a souvenir photo frame and a PhotoPass gift certificate so we can take advantage of the talented photographers here and treasure the memories we make this week forever.

And here’s our first speaker… Matt Jacobson. He was the eighth employee at Facebook! He’s not a keynote speaker/PowerPoint kind of guy. His girlfriend is a fashion blogger and a spyware/malware blogger.

  1. The web is organizing around people.
  2. Build your brand by connecting with moms.
  3. Manage your personal and professional identities.

His AOL ID used to be MFJ20th because 20th Century Fox did not have internal email back in the day.

In the 1990s, the web was about browsing. In the 2000s, it was about search. Today, it’s about discovery. We discover things from our friends on Facebook. (And Twitter. Shh!) Globally, borders are being replaced with connections. FB is adding about 1,000,000 users per day. They have 500 million users worldwide.

Moms are telling their stories on Facebook. FB has very few clusters, but they do study a mom cluster that they talk to advertisers about.  Moms use Facebook to stay connected with friends. FB lets you share your stories where moms share theirs.

Step 1: Create a Page and post your blog stories.

Step 2: Integrate Social Plugins on your blog. (Add the FB like button, the TweetMeme tweet button, etc.)

Step 3: Advertise to target new moms and build your business.

Step 4: Use insights to better understand your audience. (Hmm, I’m not familiar with Facebook Insights. Will check it out.)

This is the same model he presents to big brands like Disney, P&G, Intel, Mercedes, etc.

Separate identities: profiles and pages. Mark Zuckerberg has a personal profile and a public page now, although he didn’t really think he needed a separate page for a long time.

Managing audiences: lists.

Controlling data: privacy settings.

(He says he loves all of these babies here, but baby noises seem to be disrupting his train of thought.)

Go tell your story. (We’re watching a video about the 93 Dollar Club, which is really pretty cool.)

Facebook is not a media company, but a technology platform company. It’s made for people like us who want to connect with others 1 on 1.

He’s opening up the floor for questions, because otherwise he’s going to have to vamp for a while.

Kelby wants to know when she can change her page name. (Type-A Mom is now Type-A Parent.) She hasn’t been able to change her FB fan page name. Matt said he’ll help her with that. He “knows a guy.” Much laughter.

Can you make Discussions searchable? One FB  group had to migrate to Big Tent because the other site had searchable forums. Matt says that no one has ever asked him that.

A billion photos are uploaded every day on Facebook. Teenage girls and women 25+ are the biggest photo users on FB.

Question about the age limit on Facebook, since many parents let their kids create profiles before they turn 13. How is it being policed? When Matt’s daughters turned 13, he made them explain to him why they wanted to sign up for Facebook before he would let them create accounts. He made them invisible at first, so they had to find people to friend. FB does not police young people. Parents need to be responsible and talk to their kids about being responsible on Facebook. Matt used one of his email addresses for his daughters’ accounts so he gets the notices for friend requests and stuff.

Inside Facebook is a blog that will tell you about all the new things going on at Facebook. So if you have a hard time keeping up with all of the new things on Facebook, that’s where you can go.

What do you do about businesses making personal profile accounts on Facebook? FB does not have enough manpower to deal with complaints.

About 700,000 sites use Facebook credentials for their login.

Matt tells us that he is really good friends with Kanye West…and the whole room erupts into laughter.

Amanda from High Impact Mom wants to know if we can get email notification about Facebook security and privacy changes. Facebook “roosters” big changes at the top of the page whenever things change, and the notice won’t go away until you close it.

Facebook does not have any plans to allow Pages to send FB messages to personal users.

“There are so few people who do what you want to do.” Not many users actually want to do things as personal users and public pages the way we do. “You’re slicing it rather thin here.”

Soon, we’ll be able to integrate Facebook comments on our blogs.
