Dear TJ,

We’re in a hotel! It’s a big adventure because we have no power at our house. The power went out on Thursday night/Friday morning around 3:30 am, and you climbed into bed with Mommy and Daddy. None of us slept much after that.

It got very cold in our house when the power wasn’t back on last night, so Grandpa Gene and Grandma Diane were nice enough to get us a hotel room next to theirs when they came up to visit us. You were upset at first that we weren’t going home, but then you got very excited about our hotel. We’re on a little vacation. An adventure. You’d never stayed in a hotel before.

When you woke up this morning, you told us, “I want to stay here!” Which was good, because our power still wasn’t back on. We had a nice breakfast at the hotel; you had some milk, some orange juice, bacon, home fries, and raisins.

Grandpa Gene asked if you wanted to go see Santa, so we called up the rest of the Grandmas to see if they wanted to come along. We went back home to pick up a few things we’d forgotten yesterday (it was only 47 degrees inside, so we drained the water out of all of the pipes!) while the Grandmas had some lunch. Then we all went to Colonie Center (Grandpa Joe, too) to see Santa.

We weren’t sure how it would go, but you did great! We were so proud of you. It’s highway robbery what they charge for those Santa pictures, but Grandpa Gene offered to buy some for everyone. So we got the big package. They came out so great – what a sweet memory they will be!

You were a very good boy while we did a little more shopping. Back at the hotel, you and Daddy played with our Christmas present from Grandpa Gene while Mommy took a little cat nap before dinner. (Grandpa Gene and Grandma Diane gave you a really cool tree house that we’ll need to put together when we get home, but you guys were playing what they got for Daddy and me – Guitar Hero World Tour!)

We went to dinner at the Dakota, where Mommy and Daddy got engaged, with all of the available grandparents. It was a delicious dinner, and you ate like such a big boy! You had some of their special hearty grain bread, some carrots from the salad bar, most of your macaroni and cheese, and an Oreo ice cream sundae!

Now we’re back in the hotel room (I’ve added most of this since I first started writing this afternoon) and you’ve had a nice bath before going to bed. You’re still not quite asleep, but you’re quite cozy in the rollaway bed with your pillow, comforter, and stuffed animals from home.

I’m so glad you’re enjoying this little unplanned vacation.

Love,
Mommy
