Classic Mashed Potatoes

You may not know this, but I am a potato fanatic. I’ve always piled mashed potatoes onto my plate before I even reach for the meat on the table. When I was a kid and we had Thanksgiving at my grandma’s house, my Aunt Terry and I would joke that we were splitting the entire bowl of mashed potatoes without sharing with the rest of the family. Now that I’m a grown up and my mom spearheads the whole Thanksgiving dinner operation, I’m in charge of the mashed potatoes now. This year, I peeled and prepared 15 pounds of them. (Thanks to my brother Josh for helping chop them up as I peeled.)

This is what 15 pounds of boiling potatoes looks like

Given my love of potatoes, I was more than happy to help promote an upcoming Facebook chat with Roots cookbook author Diane Morgan. I didn’t post about this too much in advance, because in my experience, attendance in these chats is decided by what you are doing on that day, in that moment.

Roots Cookbook Author Diane Morgan’s Facebook Chat

So when can you chat with Diane Morgan about potatoes? I’m glad you asked. Here’s the full scoop, pulled directly from the event page on Facebook:

Get ready to dazzle guests this holiday season by joining us for a live Q-and-A with award-winning cookbook author Diane Morgan. Diane’s newest cookbook Roots: The Definitive Compendium is on store shelves now and she will be making a guest appearance on our page to share some of her new recipes along with do-ahead appetizer ideas and classic holiday fare for those upcoming family gatherings and tree-trimming parties. As a “Real Mom” of two, Diane knows the challenge of preparing healthy fare during the holiday season, so she’ll also be offering a few tips for cooking nutritious but festive meals.

To join the chat, simply “like” the Potatoes, Taters and Spuds Facebook page and begin posting your questions and comments for Diane on the page wall at 5 p.m. PST/8 p.m. EST on Monday, November 26. RSVP today so we know you’ll be joining us.

Featured Prize! During the Facebook chat we will be announcing how to enter to win a copy of Diane’s new Roots cookbook. See you there!

So you can ask Diane all of your burning potato questions on Facebook tomorrow (Monday). As long as there are no family emergencies and our Internet doesn’t go out randomly, I’m going to be there. 🙂

I was also give links to three of Diane Morgan’s recipes from Roots to share:

The Potatoes, Taters & Spuds Giveaway

What’s in it for you? Let me start by telling you what was in it for me. The agency that contacted me about this chat sent me my very own prize pack containing:

  • A $20 Visa gift card
  • A potato coloring book
  • A potato masher
  • Microwave Cooking Basics for Potatoes
  • Recipe cards for Tuscan Potato Skillet, Turkey-Potato Dinner Wraps, and Mediterranean Potato Salad
  • A Potatoes Goodness Unearthed shopping list pad (with potatoes pre-filled at the top of the list!)
  • A pamphlet about potato nutrition and more recipes: Potato and Egg Dinner Bake, Pork and Potato Verde, and Mediterranean Lemon Chicken and Potatoes
  • A recipe booklet containing three (3) potato salad recipes and three (3) potato soup recipes

TJ absconded with the coloring book before I even told him it existed because he’d spotted it in the bottom of the box. I already used the Visa gift card on my pre-Thanksgiving shopping trip that included 10 out of 15 pounds of potatoes for mashing. The rest involves discussing with my husband when he’d like to try some of these new recipes. Personally, I’m very interested in trying the Turkey-Potato Dinner Wraps first!

You can win the same prize pack I received by entering my Rafflecopter giveaway below!

  1. There is nothing like homemade mashed potatoes…at Thanksgiving we eat them with my mom’s creamed peas on top, instead of gravy!

  2. You joke about spliting the bowl of taters with your aunt…I think I really did that late one night with my roommate when I was in college (MANY years ago). Anyhow, my fave way to have potatos, really…potato chips!
