I had the pleasure of receiving several varieties of HomeFree organic cookies to review. Not only are HomeFree cookies organic, but they’re peanut free, tree nut free, egg free, and dairy free. They’re also wheat free, except for traces that may be found due to agricultural practices involving oats.  Thankfully, we don’t have any of these food allergies in our home, but we do have friends with nut allergies. Did you know that 2.2 million school-aged kids have food allergies that prevent them from enjoying the yummy baked goods the rest of us eat? That’s why Jill Robbins founded the HomeFree bakery – so kids with food allergies could feel included at social occasions by not having to miss out on cookies and cakes!

HomeFree sent me a box of oatmeal cookies, some chocolate chip cookies, and some mini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I am only slightly disappointed that I didn’t get to sample the chocolate chocolate chip cookies. I did enjoy everything I tried.

I’ll start out by saying that the oatmeal cookies were my least favorite. That’s not to say that they were bad, but I have some textural issues when it comes to food, and these were slightly spongier than I think cookies should be. They still tasted just fine to me, but I had a hard time accepting them as cookies. (TJ may be the one who was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, but I have more than my fair share of Asperger tendencies!)

I had nothing bad to say about the chocolate chip cookies. They did not have the sponginess of the oatmeal cookies. And how can you go wrong with chocolate chips? Very satisfying. I don’t know if anyone else in my family got to try any of the chocolate chip cookies, because I may have eaten them all myself.

My favorite cookies were the mini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I am a huge fan of oatmeal cookies in general, but I don’t like raisins, and usually you can only find oatmeal raisin cookies for sale. But oatmeal chocolate chip cookies? A heavenly combination. I don’t know if it was the size of the mini cookies or the presence of the chocolate chips, but these weren’t spongy at all. In fact, they were perhaps the best oatmeal chocolate chip cookies I’ve ever tasted. My only complaint is that, because they’re bite-sized, these mini cookies are far too easy to eat. I think I ended up finishing off the last half of the box as much lunch sometime last week. I’d intended to have one or two to tide me over until it was time to eat an actual meal, but I just couldn’t stop myself. They were too good.

But I’m not going to feel too guilty about eating all those cookies. HomeFree cookies are made with whole grain. Each serving of the mini oatmeal chocolate chip cookies contains two grams of fiber – and I think I had two to three servings at that last sitting. Only 120 calories per serving, too.

If your family or friends have food allergies, I think HomeFree cookies are a great choice for after school snacks, sleepovers, and birthday parties. Who am I kidding? I’m a grown-up, and I enjoyed them, too. I am an admittedly super-picky eater, and these cookies passed my stringent taste test. If a picky eater who doesn’t have food allergies likes them, they’re certain to please a kid with food allergies who isn’t allowed to eat other tasty baked goods!

  1. Hi Christina

Thanks for the review. My son, Landon, has a sever peanut/tree nut allergy. We’ve been to the hospital a few times before.

We are always on the lookout for new foods that are nut free. We are def going to give these a try.
